Swimming Frequently Asked Questions

“My child can’t swim, can they wear ‘floaties’ in the pool?”

No, flotation devices are not allowed in community pools.

“Should my child bring money for the pool snack-bar?

How much should they bring?”

The Deterding Pool snack-bar is providing healthier snack options this summer.  The items range in price from $0.25 to $2.00.  Please send an appropriate amount of money with your child, as the Summer Day Camp Staff will not hold or carry money for the campers.

“How do you know if my child can swim?”

Swim tests are conducted by the Deterding Pool lifeguards for every swimmer.

“Who can jump off the diving board?”

Strong swimmers who comfortably pass the swim test.

“Who can go down the waterslide?”

Children that pass the swim test.

“Is there a secure place for my child to keep their belongings?”

The campers will keep their valuables and belongings in the camp activity room. This room will be locked and the campers will not have in-and-out privileges, while at the pool.

“Why does the camp go to the pool only three days per week?”

If campers do the same activity every afternoon, even swimming at our swimming pool, the campers will become bored and lose enthusiasm for swimming.  As an alternative, the Summer Day Camp is jam-packed with fun activities planned for our hot afternoons.  We have planned a variety of activities, such as a slip n’ slide, duck-duck-splash!, and cardboard boat building.

“Can my child wear goggles and snorkel gear?”

Swimmers are allowed to wear goggles that do not cover the nose.  However, snorkel gear is not allowed in the pool.

If your camper is unable to swim, swim lessons are encouraged and offered through

Arden Manor Recreation and Park District.
